Banana Shake
کیلے کا شیک
Banana shake is the most ordered drink at Pakistani juice shops, poured thick and frothy from a steel jug into tall glasses. It is a quick breakfast, an after-school drink and a filling choice for sehri in Ramadan. What makes the juice-shop version so good is very ripe bananas, milk that is properly cold, and blending the bananas smooth first before the rest of the milk and ice go in.

Method
Tap a step when it is done.
Peel the bananas, break them into chunks and drop them into the blender jar. If using dates, pit them and add them too.
Add the almonds, the sugar or honey and the cardamom.
Pour in half the milk and blend for 30–40 seconds, until the bananas and almonds are completely smooth with no lumps.
Add the rest of the cold milk and the ice cubes.
Blend again on high for 20–30 seconds, until frothy and the ice is fully crushed.
Pour into tall glasses straight away, with the froth on top.
Kitchen notes
Use bananas with brown spots. They are sweeter and blend smoother; underripe bananas taste starchy and need much more sugar.
Drink it within 15 minutes. Banana shake darkens and thickens as it sits, and turns slightly grey after an hour.
For an extra-thick shake, freeze peeled banana chunks overnight and skip the ice.
The juice-shop favourite
Every Pakistani neighbourhood has a juice shop with a row of blenders, a fridge full of milk and a stack of bananas hanging by the counter. Banana shake is the drink those shops sell the most, all year round, because bananas are cheap and available in every season. At home it is a five-minute breakfast for school mornings, a filling drink for sehri during Ramadan, and an easy way to use up bananas that have gone soft and spotty.
Blending it smooth
Two habits give a home banana shake the juice-shop texture. The first is blending the bananas, almonds and sweetener with only half the milk. With less liquid in the jar, the blades grind everything to a smooth purée instead of spinning chunks around. The second is adding the rest of the cold milk and ice afterwards and blending again on high, which crushes the ice and whips in the froth. Using very ripe bananas means you need less sugar and get a naturally creamy shake.
Variations
- Dates and honey: replace the sugar with 3 soft dates or a tablespoon of honey.
- Badam banana: soak 10 almonds overnight, peel them and blend with the bananas.
- Peanut butter: add a tablespoon for a high-protein gym shake.
- Ice cream: blend in a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a richer, dessert-style glass.
Serving
Serve banana shake as soon as it is made, ideally in chilled glasses. Bananas brown quickly once cut, so it does not store well in the fridge. If you want it ready faster in the morning, peel and slice the bananas the night before and freeze them in a bag; blend them straight from frozen with cold milk.
Questions people ask
Can I make banana shake without sugar?
Yes. Very ripe bananas are sweet on their own, and 3 soft dates or a tablespoon of honey add natural sweetness. Blend the dates with the bananas first so no pieces are left.
Is banana shake good for sehri?
It is a common sehri drink because milk and bananas are filling and give steady energy. Pair it with something salty and drink plenty of water as well.
How do juice shops make it so thick?
They use plenty of ripe bananas, full-fat milk, and often a spoon of milk powder or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Add either if you want that rich, heavy shake.
