Overnight Oats (Kheer-Style, No Cooking)

اوور نائٹ اوٹس (کھیر جیسی، بغیر پکائے)

Overnight oats are breakfast that makes itself: rolled oats stirred into milk and yogurt in the evening, softened in the fridge overnight into a thick, creamy pudding. Flavoured with dates, cardamom and a pinch of saffron or rose, they taste like a cool kheer, which makes them an easy sell to Pakistani children. There's no cooking at all, so even older children can make their own.

Method

Tap a step when it is done.

  1. In a bowl or two jars, stir together the oats, milk, yogurt, dates, cardamom, honey and seeds until well mixed.

  2. Cover and refrigerate overnight, or for at least 4 hours. The oats soak up the liquid and turn soft and creamy.

  3. In the morning, stir well and add a splash of milk if too thick. Top with fresh fruit and nuts and eat cold, or warm for 1 minute in the microwave in winter.

Kitchen notes

Use rolled (jumbo or regular) oats. Instant oats turn mushy and steel-cut oats stay too hard without cooking.

Flavour ideas: mango and saffron; banana and cocoa; apple and cinnamon; rose syrup and pistachio for a falooda feel.

Keeps 3 days in closed jars in the fridge. Add fresh fruit on the day you eat it.

Breakfast while you sleep

The idea is simple: oats left in milk overnight soften without cooking. It started in Switzerland as Bircher muesli over a century ago and became popular worldwide as “overnight oats”. For busy parents, it means breakfast is ready in the fridge before anyone wakes up.

A desi flavour

Children used to kheer and meetha dalia often love oats prepared the same way: milky, lightly sweet and fragrant with cardamom. Dates add sweetness and fibre without refined sugar. (basil seeds), used in falooda, swell up and add a fun texture.

Good nutrition, small effort

Oats provide slow-release energy and fibre, and milk and yogurt add protein and calcium. That combination keeps children full through the morning better than sugary cereal. Top with seasonal fruit: mango in summer, guava or orange in winter.

Make a week at once

Line up five jars on Sunday evening and fill them; the plain base keeps for three days, so add fresh fruit each morning. For warm breakfasts on cold days, see savoury dalia. More ideas are in our kids’ breakfast collection.

Questions people ask

Are raw oats safe to eat?

Yes. Rolled oats are steamed and flattened during processing, and soaking softens them. Soaking also makes them easier to digest.

My child doesn't like the texture. What can I do?

Blend the soaked oats smooth in the morning, like a thick shake, or cook them for 3 minutes into warm porridge.
